Evening Course (5 Weeks)

Set Up, Launch, and Grow Your Podcast

Next start date: This course is not running at the moment, but we are currently running our “Podcasting for Your Business” course

Outline

Over five weeks, one evening per week, you will learn everything you need to know to set up, launch, and grow your own podcast.

This is a hands-on, practical course with a professional podcaster, where you’ll be introduced to podcast production. You’ll practice recording techniques, try out equipment, learn how to edit, and get ongoing feedback from our team of experienced podcasting professionals.

No previous podcasting or audio editing experience is required but, while not essential, participants should ideally arrive with some ideas about the type of podcast they would like to make.

In five weeks, we’ll get you from a curious podcast listener to a fully-fledged podcaster with the ability to record, edit, and get your show out into the world!

*Note: this is an in-person course, in our studios in Dublin city centre. However, in line with Covid restrictions, it may be wholly or partially run online. Please get in touch for more details.

Schedule

Week 1: Getting Started

In Week 1 we’ll start getting ideas together and planning out your show. We’ll delve into podcast formats and styles, topics and episode structure, picking a name, finding your target audience, and lots more. There will be plenty of audio examples and feedback on your own podcast ideas.

Week 2: Interviewing, Researching, and Scripting

In Week 2 we’ll turn to the guests. How do you prepare for and conduct an engaging interview? How do you get the most out of your interviewee? We’ll look at interview techniques, research and preparation, as well as scripting dialogue for audio.

Week 3: Equipment and Recording

This week we’ll get hands-on with all the equipment for recording in studio, at home, or out in the field. We’ll look at microphones, portable recorders, soundproofing, and recording accessories. We’ll also cover microphone technique and how to avoid common recording problems.

Week 4: Software and Editing

In Week 4 we’ll look at all your options for editing your audio, focusing on Audacity, a free program used widely by podcasters. You’ll learn the basics of editing audio, adding music and other clips, and exporting to MP3.

Week 5: Distributing, Promoting, and Monetizing

Finally, we’ll cover everything you need to get your podcast hosted, uploaded and listed on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and everywhere else your listeners will expect to find it. We’ll also give you some tips on promoting your show and setting it up for future growth and monetization.

Meet your tutor

Conor Reid is our Head of Podcasts here at The Podcast Studios and also an accomplished podcast host. He knows everything about starting a podcast from scratch and will guide you through writing, editing and producing your own podcast.

You can hear Conor’s own show Words To That Effect over on HeadStuff Podcasts. The show is in its sixth season, has been performed live in Ireland and the UK, featured in The Irish Times and The Guardian, and won bronze at the Irish Podcast Awards…not too shabby!
